What A Turnaround!

Topic: Stock Selection
Well, it's been over 3 years since I last posted about my stock investment dealings. I pretty much stayed away from the stock market the past 2-1/2 years and resumed buying stocks again after the market crash back in November 2008 as I saw plenty of buying opportunities, i.e., cheap shares! Then there were more buying opportunities in March of this year when the stock market went even lower!!!
I loaded my stock portfolio with a number of real estate investment trust (REIT) and energy stocks. The REITs have performed much better for me than the energy stocks. I have since sold all my REIT and energy stocks except for a couple of laggards which are currently in the negative (paper loss). However, the two are paying dividends at 7% or better which beats any bank savings rate or CDs by a wide margin and I'm keeping them until I sell them before the end of the year.
In the meantime, I've also been buying, selling, buying, and selling Alcoa which has netted me a handsome profit of $4000 so far. However I blew a couple of calls on two stocks: Apple and Bank of America. I sold them way too early and missed out on what would have been great profits.
In May, my stock interest turned to swine flu stocks and loaded up on my old friend NVAX. I have also bought SVA, APT, AVII, and VICL.
To date, my portfolio has swung from a lowest unrealized paper loss of -$13,457 on March 6, 2009 to a highest unrealized paper profit of +$38,654 on October 22, 2009!!! Pretty good turnaround, eh?
